With Michael Carrick injured for the start of the season and Marouane Fellaini seemingly out of Louis van Gaal’s plans, it appeared that the new signings had their places secured. Blind came into the holding role, Di Maria and Herrera played either side of the Dutchman, with Juan Mata or Wayne Rooney playing behind two strikers. Inevitably, however, injuries kicked in. As each of them dropped out from the starting 11, it seemed like we would begin to struggle. Van Gaal has dealt with it by switching to his preferred 3-4-1-2 formation and, although there are many critics of the system, it’s working for United. Carrick rightly deserves credit for balancing the unsteady ship, and after Rooney’s commanding performance as a central midfielder against Newcastle on Boxing Day, the conundrum is clear for Van Gaal – who does he play in midfield? Assuming we had all players available, United would have a number of options to choose from in central midfield. For me, Carrick deserves to keep his place.
