Man, Voice Overs are so easy, I bet.. you just get paid for - TopicsExpress

Man, Voice Overs are so easy, I bet.. you just get paid for talking into a mic.. anyone can do that. Youre so lucky! You dont even have to work. Think about that for a moment... if it were that simple. EVERYONE would be doing it. Theyd drop their jobs and do what all other voice actors are doing, right? So why isnt everyone doing this? Its easy right? Well.. heres a hint. Its NOT easy. Doing Voice Acting or Voice Overs, earning a living, and keeping yourself from having to go BACK to the nine-to-five jobs REQUIRES a passion, dedication, and PERSISTENCE that never wanes. After the hobby of practice (which is USUALLY the first phase where you realize either, HEY, THIS IS AMAZING!! I want to do this all the time and learn more! or, HEY, THIS IS GREAT.. but not something I wannah do all the time. The second phase is where realization hits IF you decide you want to do voices professionally. After hobby play, comes these facts that you start to take into consideration. 1) Wow.. this requires a lot of study and an artistical approach toward diction, enunciation, tone, cadence, and emotion. A focus and sharpness on what consumers need to hear for a commercial read. Realizing that a promo is different than animation, animation is not the same as a commercial, E-learning is not the same as... well, you get the point. 2) Oh wow, Im gonna have to learn how to act in order to provide genuine TRUTH behind my emotions. Might have to get coached for my voice and take acting classes. Because its most definitely NOT about having a good voice. You are an ACTOR.. The exact same as a real on-camera actor. Let there be no mistake that a voice actor is acting to the same level as an on camera actor (heck, even harder so because you dont have people there to interact with) 3) Crap.. now I know how to perform, but I need to know about business and marketing to get myself out there and LOOK professional. Im a brand.. How am I different from the rest of the competition and the other people already out there doing voices? (Cant copy anyone else anymore.. time to come up with your OWN stuff.. Bugs Bunny was born from Mel Blancs own creativity, not from him copying another voice actor. Hmm.. what was all those acting classes for, oh yeah!) 4) Jeeez.. most of my time is spent auditioning more than anything else, I think I spend more time doing THAT than working! Now I have to learn how to deal with criticism, coaching, and getting turned down without taking it personally. 5) Even after taking all of the previous stuff into considering.. I may STILL not get work, which calls for adjustments, fixes, focus, and PERSISTENCE, and PASSION to just roll with the punches and keep going. This is only a part of how you make a living and how you start your own business in voice over. Still wannah say its easy? Then go for it!
