Man charged following pursuit in stolen taxi across Sydney’s east A man has been charged after he allegedly stole a taxi and led police on a pursuit in Sydney’s eastern suburbs. About 3.45am today (Sunday 13 April 2014), a taxi driver stopped his vehicle on Bronte Road at Bondi to collect a passenger. It’s alleged a man got into the front passenger seat of the taxi while arguing with another man who was standing on the street. The driver – a 41-year-old man – got out of the driver’s seat to approach the pair and stop them arguing. Police will allege the passenger then slid across into the driver’s seat and drove the taxi from the scene. Police were alerted and officers from Eastern Suburbs Local Area Command attended and commenced a search for the man and vehicle. About 4am, the taxi was tracked to Market Street in Randwick by an onboard GPS device; however, a pursuit was initiated by police when the driver allegedly failed to stop. A short time later the vehicle stopped on Gilderthorpe Avenue at Randwick. The driver allegedly resisted arrest and was submitted to a roadside breath test, which returned a positive result. The 26-year-old man was arrested and taken to Waverley Police Station where a breath analysis returned an alleged reading of 0.189. The Winston Hills man was charged with take and drive conveyance without consent; high-range PCA; resist police; and fail to stop. He was given bail to appear at Waverley Local Court on Wednesday 7 May
