Released on this date, in 1984, one of the most controversial horror films of my childhood, SILENT NIGHT, DEADLY NIGHT. Most of the films nasty reputation stems from the fact that it features a psychotic killer who dresses like Santa Claus, but were it not for all the media attention and hubbub, it would have been quite forgettable. The formulaic tale concerns a boy who witnesses his parents murder at the hands of a madman in a Santa suit and thus grows up to become....wait for it...a murdeous madman in a Santa suit. Its cheesy, stupid gory fun. It has zero logic and Linnea Quigley being impaled on deer antlers, topless of course. This classic outgrossed another classic in its opening weekend, a little flick called A NIGHTMARE ON ELM STREET. It was blasted by critics, Siskel & Ebert (R.I.P. both) even read through the production credits and shamed every guilty person. Personally, I like it. Its just a dumbly fun slasher movie, were it not for the killer dressing as Santa no one would have given a shit... -- John
