Management minute: The next paradigm. "If I had asked people what they wanted, they would have said faster horses." – Henry Ford, Founder of Ford Motor Company If you lived in the time of Henry Ford would you have been one of those persons who wanted faster horses? Would you have resisted change when the horse you asked for was replaced with a mechanical horse? Henry Ford did give the people exactly what they wanted, they wanted faster horses, and he gave them horsepower. I’ve heard Mr. Ford’s quote above used to mean that he refused the needs and wants of the customer and gave them what he wanted them to have but that is not what Henry Ford did at all. Mr. Ford interpreted the need and met the need with a different method product. The product became the basis for the next paradigm. The future is all around us. Customers are asking for things that ‘don’t exist’. But, they do exist; they exist in the imagination of the customer who thought up the request. Henry Ford is credited with the perfections of the assembly line process while making automobiles the next paradigm. Our generations next paradigm is all around us. Our customers are telling us what they need and want. If we interpret them wisely we can excel like Ford, or we can become obsolete like the horse dealer.
