Manchester United have reportedly submitted a €20m bid for Sporting Lisbon defender Marco Rojo after the player told the Portuguese club that he wanted to leave for Old Trafford. According to sources at Sky Sports News, the Argentinean World Cup player has formally handed in a transfer request, specifically stating that it is Louis van Gaals team he wants to join, with United keen to capitalise. It seems the 24-year-old, who was previously said to have been on Southamptons radar, has only recently surfaced as a target for United. Sky has cited reports coming from Portugal to suggest that the Old Trafford clubs interest only became apparent on Tuesday morning. Rojo, who is equally comfortable at centre-back or left-back, would fit well into the 5-3-2 formation that van Gaal has been using throughout pre-season. He first joined Sporting from Spartak Moscow in 2012, after initially arriving in Europe from hometown club Estudiantes a year earlier, and has been a regular over the last two years. The defender was impressive for the Argentina during the World Cup as the Albiceleste reached the final. En-route to the final he scored his maiden international goal in the important group stage win over Nigeria and was later named in FIFAs Castrol Index XI, which analyses performance data to produce a statistically objective team of the tournament.
