Mandawuy Yunupingu & Yothu Yindi – “Treaty” Mandawuy Yunupingu, (17 September 1956 – 2 June 2013), an Aboriginal Australian man, was a musician and educator. A Yolgnu (tribe) man, from 1986, he was front man of Australian rock band Yothu Yindi (Yolgnu for ‘mother and child’); in 1989 became Assistant Principal, then Principal of the Yirrkala Community School; was named 1992 Australian of the Year; was awarded an honorary Doctorate by Queensland University of Technology in 1998; and inducted into the ARIA Hall of Fame in 2012. He died in 2013, aged 56, of advanced renal failure, drawing attention to the greatly reduced life expectancy of Aboriginal people. (*source: Wikipedia) “Treaty” is Yothu Yindi’s best known song. The band merges cultures with the use of pop and rock music beats and regular instruments like drums and guitar, with traditional aboriginal song, language, instruments such as yidaki and bilma, and dance.
