Mandela Day 2014 at FreeMe – “Books and - TopicsExpress

Mandela Day 2014 at FreeMe – “Books and Bricks” Mandela Day is not only about doing “good” - it is about people applying the theme of service in their own context. The official themes for Mandela Day 2014 are education and literacy, shelter and food security, and participation through volunteerism. Books: The theme of education and literacy speaks to FreeMe`s Environmental Education initiative in association with School Media. Talks are given to Grade 3 and 4 learners at nine schools in Alexandra and Diepsloot. The presentations are conducted by the Wildlife Warriors, headed up by volunteer Michael Schrenk. These schools are vastly under-resourced with no libraries or libraries which are very poorly stocked. We therefore appeal to the FreeMe Family and our supporters, for donations of colourful, fun and educational books in good condition, which are suitable for primary school learners. The books will be delivered to the schools when the second programme of talks resumes during the third term. Bricks: In order to improve the environment of our rehabilitating wildlife and the surroundings at our centre, our internal initiative is the procurement of 30000 paving bricks which will enable us to pave an area of 600m². The bricks will be used to pave walkways between the enclosures and renovate/repave areas where the existing paving is breaking up, uneven or virtually non-existent. These renovations are required in order to comply with Health and Safety regulations and improve storm water control. A donation of just R5 will purchase one brick towards these necessary improvements to our centre. For further information contact [email protected]
