Many a times it happens that unknowingly we start showing dependancy on a performing employee and just with the fear of losing him/her we get too much flexible with respect to timings, compensation, company rules, etc just to retain them. Now if this employee starts getting a feeling that he/she is irreplaceable and starts challenging the management, what do you think the management should do? Taking into consideration the performance and past contribution of the employee the management wants to avoid extreme decisions.
