Many are now aware of the bad cop of ISIS killings, but I think were less aware of the good cop side of their attempt/goal of mass conversions. Olaf Tryggvason, (d.1000 AD) the king and converter-in-chief of Norway, Iceland, and several island groups would have understood - as he was reported to say: All Norway should be Christian or die. This was a belief that he was willing to back up by shoving snakes down peoples throats, etc. When a group of pagans opposed him, he offered to burn them all as human sacrifices - and they agreed to conversion. These have always been things in history books to me, but now its as if there is a horrific opportunity to see brutal history repeated in front of our eyes. As we look at the terrorists of our present age, lets never fall so deep into historical amnesia that we smugly miss the point.
