Many areas across the Hudson Valley saw the unofficial first sign of winter this morning- SNOW!! Along with the snow comes more dangerous driving conditions. Since it appears that the snowy season has approached- here are some common winter driving tips. 1) Four Wheel Drive doesnt make you invincible. --While 4 wheel drive can help your car out of some slippery situations- it doesnt mean you should drive at full speed as if the road conditions are normal. 2) Vehicle maintenance & preparation. --Make sure your tires have at least 6/32 inch tread on them and keep them fully inflated. Keep at least a half tank of gas in the vehicle at all times. Check your Antifreeze and Battery levels and make sure defrosters are in good working order. Keep a snow shovel, kitty litter, a flashlight and a window scraper in the car. 3) Dont follow too closely. --Give yourself double or triple the amount of space you normally would between the front of your car the the car in front of you, a stop sign, or a curve in the road. 4) Brake slowly. --Avoid having to jam on the brakes at the last second, give yourself time to slowly apply steady pressure to the brakes. If your vehicle is not equipped with anti-lock brakes, and you need to stop quickly- pump them by braking quickly over and over again. 5) Slow Down! Feel free to share these tips, and like if you had snow in your area today!
