Many of my friends dont get how people can be so invested emotionally in a local sports team. Thats ok. Sometimes I take it too seriously. I can remember turning into a demon for a moment after the Bills lost the Superbowl to the Giants. I lunged toward and shouted, You have no idea what this means! at three friends who were playfully teasing me. Time has made me a better and more compassionate man. I can now accept that my team winning or losing doesnt warrant anger. Theres a place for sports. That place doesnt come before family or comradery or community or joy or consolation. What Ive realized is that place is set firmly in the center of those things. Feeling alone is terrible. Feeling a part of something is wonderful. Jim Kelly is cancer free.
