Many of our guests like to eat out, we have two excellent eating places within a mile, Pickwick Inn and Ring O Bells, but there are so many other great places to eat within a close distance of Trevorrick Farm. My lovely guests in Lily Pad last week were kind enough to provide their view of the places they had eaten, and also a lovely review of their cottage, right at the bottom, scroll down. Post is long, but beautifully written so I have posted it all, so much appreciated...... Steins Fish & Chips - queue and queue! Situated in a long building on the harbour front, just before the main town. We went here for lunch on our last full day. You can queue for the takeaway or the restaurant (make sure you get in the correct queue!), which is a benched seating area, where you get sat as soon as a place becomes available. It is a very nice seating area but noisy and very busy. They take your order at the table, eventually! Look out for the specials board - there are some great fresh catch options as well as the really good main menu. Your food comes in its box and any sides - ie freshly made tartare sauce, mushy peas etc. in little plastic pots. It is nicely presented though with even a slice of lemon and a sprig of parsley! We also had bread and butter, so theres all options covered. I believe you can have wine too, although a nice pot of tea was all I wanted. This is not cheap and would be expensive for a family, I guess, depending on what you have - you can just have a chip butty! The fish is very fresh and tasty as you would expect, in a nice light batter and great chips! The Seafood Restaurant - Rick Steins - Book! I booked 6 - 8 weeks in advance. This was a very special treat. It is seriously not cheap, but if you go with that in mind, then you will enjoy it. The restaurant has a modern but tasteful decor, with lots of local art around the walls. I did not find it in anyway intimidating, in a too posh way. The staff were excellent and there was a really nice ambiance. We sat at the front side of the bar which I think was preferable - the back of the restaurant was very busy and seemed a little more compact. I had read Trip Advisor in advance and asked for a table on the outside which I was very grateful for. It felt a little more intimate. Our waitress was brilliant! She helped make the evening that bit better. She was very efficient and helpful and made us laugh! The food - I had the Prawn, pork and octopus stir fry with glass noodles, peanuts, chili and green mango (I think) - it was one of the best meals Ive ever eaten. I loved it. I wish there had been this as a main option. It made my main course not so special - I had the hake cooked en-papillote with fennel and sun-dried tomatos and salsa and green mayonnaise. It was a lovely piece of fish but Id been spoilt by my starter! Hubby had the sea bass starter with mango, avocado, and chili which was delicious and fish curry for main, which he enjoyed. I had the most amazing desert - a raspberry macaroon with raspberries, a raspberry mouse, and a lychee sorbet on top with a sesame seed wafer. Pic attached. All accompaniments are extra. The wine is not cheap. Excellent all the same. The Blue Tomato - Rock - relaxed cafe with great views We stopped here for a drink - hubby had a bottle of cider and I had the Green Lemonade. Wow! It was seriously good. It came presented in a small jug with a straw and was so fresh - Ive attached a pic! I wish Id been hungry enough for cake because they looked gorgeous, but I was still full from the crab salad from The Mote in Port Issac. They do some lovely meals too, I would love to go back and try some of the menu. Not the cheapest. Bin 2 - opposite The Basement A great place to sit, if you can get a table, and drink some lovely wine or even champagne. I believe they even provide blankets if its chilly! Very little space inside and not cheap, but a lovely treat. The Mote - Port Issac - we booked on the morning of our visit for lunch but there were plenty of tables This is a pub, with a good food area above. I loved the old building and the decor, although some trip advisor reviews have said a bit tatty. We had one main each, fish goujons with homemade coleslaw and salad and I had the crab salad and a side order of chips. The portions were excellent - I was really full after eating my crab - it was lovely and fresh and all taken from the shell ready to eat which is a bonus for me! The waitress was very nice and didnt know a few things we asked but was happy to go and find out. Service was a little bit chaotic. The main disapointment was there appeared to be some fantastic meals on the menu and on the specials board, but they were for the evening only. had we been nearer, I would definitely have gone back to try an evening meal. The Chough Bakery - Bakery We bought a pasty each, a loaf of bread a piece of quiche and some old fashioned bread pudding. It was all delicious! You have to be prepared to queue, and queue! But definitely worth it. The Golden Lion Hotel - for Sunday lunch - MUST book in advance Absolutely fabulous dinner. It would be our top recommendation along with The Seafood Restaurant. The portions were extremely generous - lots of lovely veg. There was a choice of 3 meats and it came with Yorkshire pudding and lots of roast potatoes. I also had a dessert which was also lovely. There are no frills, but I loved the dining area to the side of the main bar. I believe there is also a family area. The service was very efficient and friendly. The Basement - We had an evening meal but I think they serve food all day - again booking advised There are 2 areas to eat - inside and out. The outside is surrounded by glass and has some lovely harbour views. It was not great weather that evening but we were warm under the outside heaters and very comfortable. The food is what i guess you call modern British. My husband had pigeon breast on a bed of lentils to start with pea shoots and I had mussels. I had eaten lots of mussels in France the week before, but these were far nicer! We both had a fish curry for main which was very nice. The service was good and the food tasty and good size portions. And they even did a lovely review of our cottage: We were very lucky to stay in a lovely, homely and SO well equipped barn conversion. This meant it was a pleasure to go to the local shops, buy lovely local produce (and yes we did go to Tescos on the outskirts of Wadebridge) and cook a few meals at home. I really enjoyed being able to stop in some evenings and just relax with a home cooked tea and a bottle of wine! It made eating out that much better. We had just spent a week in France prior to coming to Trevorrick Farm and had had enough of eating out at nearly every meal at over-priced and over-rated restaurants. So stopping here gave us the best of both worlds and we thoroughly relaxed. The icing on the cake, was the lovely wood burner We only used it one evening but it was so welcome. Melanie and Mike couldnt have been nicer hosts and we loved seeing all the animals - especially the ducks waddling up and down behind one-another quacking away - such a well-needed tonic. We didnt even venture to the swimming pool barn complex which Im sure is just brilliant for kids especially, particularly on wet days. I have to say, I was most impressed with just how there was practically everything you could need. Lily Pads kitchen had things I don;t have at home like little ramekins. It even had vases so I could get fresh flowers. And the other criteria, which is really important to me, was just how spotless it was. We had such a wonderful stay and I have fallen in love with Padstow. Thank you again for being such wonderful hosts. Hope to see you again Sue, thanks so much for taking the time to write the above...... Melanie xxx
