Many of the smartest of conservatives sit around discussing and debating with each other what a James Madison, a George Washington, or a Tom Jefferson wrote here or said there. They will even divide into opposing schools of thought based on such studies: How religious was this one? Did that other really believe in free markets? Was the American Revolution a true revolution or an evolution of European modes and orders? Ive watched these conflicts erupt more times than I can count. Few smart progressives, however, sit around analyzing the writings of a John Dewey or the speeches of a Woodrow Wilson or a Franklin Roosevelt. Progressives simply propose more policies than conservatives can keep up with, most of which offer to some the wealth and property earned by others. From the progressive point of view, conservative debates over the Founders and others seems akin to fighting over the number of angels dancing upon a pinhead. This explains much about why government has grown without pause over the last century and why conservatism is no serious political threat to progressivism.
