Many of you have asked me about my job as a criminal defense lawyer is: How can you defend someone thats guilty? What do you do if you know they are guilty? Yes, sometimes our job is fighting for a clients innocence. Police are human beings and can make errors in judgement. So can prosecutors, so can judges, and so can defense attorneys. Investigations can be incomplete or botched, or sometimes witnesses are just lying and our clients - are telling the truth. And not all crimes are the same. Theres marijuana possession, run-of-the-mill disorderly conducts, drunk driving,.and then theres felonies. But even if our clients are not innocent, it is our duty to fight for their rights, guaranteed by the Constitution. But for me, its not just about that. Its definitely about freedom and liberty. About the right not to be judged instantly. To be presumed innocent. To be given the benefit of the doubt. These are fundamental. But its also about compassion and second chances; forgiveness and reconciliation; and realizing that many of us are capable of committing the same mistakes. Empathy. Finally, its about understanding the big picture and trying to address the root of the problem rather than treat the symptoms. To me, that is justice.
