Many of you have contacted me with concerns about recent cases of Potomac Horse Fever and rest assured if I have administered your vaccines biannually they have been appropriately vaccinated, 1-2 times per year depending on use and environment. Potomac Horse fever is a Neorickettsia of fresh water snails so although I have not had any cases recently it makes sense the incidence would be higher given warm wet weather conducive to increasing the snail population. Disease signs include depression, fever, diarrhea and aggressive foundering. The vaccine is not great as it only includes one strain and we feel there are many but if vaccinated horses contract the disease it usually manifests as mild fever and loose stool and resolves quickly with tetracycline antibiotics. If you have any further questions or if your vaccines are overdue or you did not include Potomac in your program please feel free to drop me a line.
