Many people have been asking about the recent situation in which much hate and negativity has been directed towards me and the Modest Street Fashion Project. Much of this negativity has been fueled by those who I believed to be my friends. People whos photo work I did for years without any pay because they were my friends and I supported them, their work, and their pursuits. It is unfortunate that now myself and my intentions are being attacked without any personal confrontation of the allegations being made. A few people took it upon themselves to spread a message to a number of individuals stating that they felt I was using them through taking their photos. These individuals photos were taken for free for their own personal use and were not to be used in or for the book. The individuals whos photos are intentionally taken for the book were only of people who wanted to be photographed and included in the book. They had the same level of enthusiasm as me, if not more. Each person signed a contract and release form for the photos taken for each shoot. Second, in the same message it was also stated that these women shouldnt need a man to speak for them. I have never stated that I was a voice for women through this project. I am merely a photographer documenting this trend. The allegation contradicts my actions in the V-Logs, in which I ask individuals photographed about their opinions with regards to modesty, modesty street fashion, and the like. This project has so many supporters and believers and I am forever grateful for that. It is sad that this type of behavior is happening in the Muslim community instead of us supporting one another and our creative abilities. People like the Sartorialist and HONY didnt have this type of backlash for documenting trends in the streets so long as the subjects agreed to be photographed. This is not just my project but a project for all those who are just as intrigued as I am by modest fashion all around the world. I hope the book will be of benefit and I hope that anyone else who has any allegations of me or my intentions will come to me directly to set matters straight and include me in the discussion with the multitude of people that youve included and allow my take to be heard.
