Many people who disagree with my posts about racial inequality still being rampant in our country (White privilege, the demonization of the black man, poverty, systemic racism and prejudice, police brutality, etc) always seem to try to bring up how CRIME , POVERTY, FATHERLESSNESS, and VIOLENCE plague the Black Community. They do this in an effort to craft some kind of acceptable message about WHY police officers kill Black men with NO GUN (even though they have much training in de-escalation techniques, use of nonlethal force) at much higher rates than their white counterparts, often saying that it is their own fault for being criminals or that they should have just complied. (White people are criminals and resist arrest too btw, we just dont hear about it. Why? Because they arent perceived of as big of the threat, so they arent killed. Duh) There are two points to be made here. First is that studies show that uninformed White people (those who are laypeople is what I mean here) grossly overestimate the rate of crime in the black community (media, media, media), and usually dont take into account the context and omissions in the statistics they cite. (Ex. Only 123 Blacks were killed by police vs 326 Whites... yet they fail to mention if that perp was armed, what the alleged crime was, if protocol was followed....or blacks committed this many crimes and whites committed this many in this given year...without even sighting what kinds of crimes-felonies? Misdemeanors? Violent? Property? Is this an arrest or a conviction rate? etc ) Too much loosely gathered info, worded just cleverly enough to fool you. SMH and you use it to back up an argument. Second, LETS SAY that these statistics are ENTIRELY 100% accurate for a minute (theyre not, but just for arguments sake..) . Or lets be smart and realize that there IS crime in the black community, just like there is crime in every other community. And there is a source. WHAT DO YOU CITE AS THE SOURCE OF THE PROBLEM IN THE BLACK COMMUNITY THEN? Because if Im WRONG, and we are in fact living in a POST RACIAL society where everyone is afforded the same rights and opportunities...what? The Black Community has an inherent defect? They are unwilling and unable to rise up to the greatness of the American dream? They are just too lazy to work for success? They cant appreciate and notice the opportunities afforded to them, or they just choose not to take advantage? You either believe Its nature or nurture people. I mean, let me know. Wheres your head at...really? #uncoveringyourownbias #systemicracism
