Many speakers and writers of English find themselves irritated - TopicsExpress

Many speakers and writers of English find themselves irritated with the addition (by other people) of -s or -st to certain words, as in towards, acrosst, amongst, and whilst. These are regional variations used by about 20% of the population, and they tend (like the VERY regional oncet and twicet) to show up primarily among middle class speakers in the US. My dictionaries accept toward(s) and among(st) equally, but -- like me -- frown sternly upon acrosst, oncet, and twicet. Whilst should be used only with verbs; otherwise, use while. Whilst reading a student essay, I winced. Its use is quite common in British English; in the US its considered a bit archaic.
