Many teens (and their parents) are afraid of the PSAT/SAT testing - TopicsExpress

Many teens (and their parents) are afraid of the PSAT/SAT testing to help students get into college with scholarships. Weve been using College Prep Geniuss materials for the last couple of years, and have found them to be wonderful! Id like to host a local two-day class with the author or one of her trainers from College Prep Genius. Here is the information: Kelsi (our oldest daughter) has been using College Prep Geniuss materials to prep herself for the PSAT and the SAT (high school tests taken to advance to college). Reading through and practicing the skills offered within the College Prep Genius program has really opened our eyes to how people can do very well on the PSAT (offering many college scholarships) and the SAT even if they arent all that familiar with some of the specific material on those tests. For example, some of the questions can be answered in the reading section without even reading all of the reading passages. There are some amazing techniques involved in taking the PSAT/SAT. This program (College Prep Genius) is impressive! Weve learned so much! And since the student only has about 1 minute per question during the timed PSAT/SAT test, College Prep Genius will give your student the tools to be able to work through questions at that fast pace. I have heard the author of College Prep Genius speak at the OCEAN homeschool conference in Portland, and she really knows her stuff and has helped many people understand how the PSAT and SAT operate. After viewing most of the DVDs, I much prefer seeing her live in training vs. watching her on the DVDs. Im considering hosting a 2-day seminar in Roseburg for our local 7th-12th graders using College Prep Genius materials. I would receive no payment for hosting the class, so this wouldnt be a money-maker for myself. The materials themselves, for College Prep Genius, include a DVD set, workbook, and guide, and are $99 on the College Prep Genius website...but one of the challenges is to be disciplined enough to work through the entire book and take practice tests to prepare in time for the junior year of high school when the PSAT is taken (October each year). I thought it would be so much easier for families here to have their 7th-12th graders take a crash course through all of the materials in a 2-day seminar and be very familiar with how the whole PSAT/SAT works. Kelsi has really improved her PSAT scores by working through components of this curriculum. Heres the link to more information about College Prep Genius: collegeprepgenius/about-us/ The 2-day seminar costs $249 per student (only $149 for siblings of a registered student). The cost of the seminar includes the two-day live training, College Prep Genius textbook, workbook, and DVD set. Siblings of registered students receive the two-day live training, College Prep Genius textbook, and workbook - so each family receives the DVD set included in the first registered students fee. Because all of the materials are covered in the registration fee, the 2-day seminar ends up only costing $149 (after the price of the materials you will receive), which is a fraction of the cost of PSAT/SAT Prep tutoring in Eugene and Portland. Their fees range from $150 to $300 PER HOUR of test preparation - yikes! College Prep Geniuss fee covers all instructor fees, airfare, hotel, rental car, and miscellaneous expenses; which is why each class requires a minimum student count. Minimum student number: 12 If you think your family might be interested in taking part in this type of 2-day seminar, would you please let me know by posting here or emailing me? This wont be a commitment to signing up for the seminar; Im just wanting to find out if anyone else here would be interested in this kind of thing. Also, due to the nature of the class topics, Im willing to open this up to your friends teen children as well, even if they arent homeschooled. The format this class takes is conducive to having students from a range of schooling options, and it wouldnt hinder or limit the type of training that is offered. We would have the option of having the 2-day seminar in August sometime, or in September...or later, if it worked out better for the trainers. Im thinking September would be the best option, once everyone is back into the schooling mode and has an idea of what their schedules would be like. The class would probably take place on a Friday/Saturday. Most likely, this class would be held at Wellspring Bible Fellowship just because that church is very open to allowing local homeschoolers to use their facilities without charging us any fees. So...if you think you would be interested in having one or more of your 7th-12th graders take this kind of seminar here in Roseburg, please let me know by emailing/calling me by July 26th so I can get an idea of whether or not we would have enough interest. Thanks! Julieanne 440-2122
