Many years ago I read a book by Vera Brittain, who was a nurse in WW1. Her fiance was killed in action and he was buried in France. At that time I was working in Brussels, not far from the WW1 battlefields and I managed to find Roland Leightons grave from the description in the book. I passed many similar graveyards and memorials that day. It was a very sobering experience to realise just how many men died fighting for their country in that war. I have always been a pacifist and believe that there are better ways to solve differences between people than killing each other and hope that one day we will live in such a world. Nevertheless I am grateful for the sacrifice of all those who gave their lives in both wars and all the conflicts since. They werent wrong. It was the politicians who were wrong.
