Many years ago, when I was a pissed off 16 year-old exchange - TopicsExpress

Many years ago, when I was a pissed off 16 year-old exchange student in rural France, my host father pointed out that when Europeans raise a glass in toast they look in each others eyes but Americans look at their glass**. My following years of field research has shown this to be usually true. (Watch for it. Youll see it too.) So...my friends here in the USA, when you raise your glass tonight I challenge you to look your companions in their eyes! **Ive often pondered why we look at our glass and I keep coming back to fear of spilling. Maybe well ruin the rug. Or maybe its a lingering effect of Prohibition and shortage of hooch. Or maybe its some twist of our Puritanical heritage, the boldness of naked eyes meeting over a glass of liquid sin? Whats your theory?
