MapleLeaks Archived MP of the Month ========================== Rob Nicholson March 2012This months MP of the Month is Conservative Party of Canada (CPC) MP, Rob Nicholson. Rob Nicholson was chosen on the basis of his universally panned Omnibus Crime Bill. Panned by the provinces, police, judges, legal experts, and international groups. Very few except core CPC supporters (one third of the population) support the bill. Why? Because the bill mirrors similar justice laws enacted in the US by the Republicans years ago. As theirs failed, so will ours. We can expect what happened in the US to also happen here in Canada: skyrocketing justice and prison costs, prison overcrowding and violence, private prisons, inhumane treatment of prisoners, early release of dangerous offenders to free space for new inmates (huge problem in many states like California), dramatic increase in recidivism rate - to name a few. The crime rate in Canada has been decreasing dramatically since the early 1990s when the Liberals took power. Serious and violent crime is at its lowest since the 1960s. Recent surveys show that Canadians, by a large margin, are not worried or concerned with crime. But the Government of Harper, pandering to their base and to the lowest common denominator, are fighting a battle that does not exist. What we can expect, according to legal and justice experts and pundits, is a gradual increase in the crime rate - which will accelerate over time. Violent crime, in particular, will rise rapidly as Canada becomes less safe for ordinary Canadians - young and old alike. Further, the courts will be overburdened, which will result in hundreds or thousands of cases being dismissed. This has legal experts extremely concerned, and is already happening in Canada - especially in British Columbia. We can expect many criminals (including violent offenders) to go free, and back on the street to re-offend. This is Harpers Canada, and this is Rob Nicholson bill. And for this reason, Rob Nicholson was chosen as this months MP of the Month because of him tabling justice legislation as Justice Minister which in fact will make Canada less safe.
