Marcel Dzama wins the Hnatyshyn Foundation Visual Arts Award One of Canada’s most comprehensive awarding bodies for the arts has announced the recipients of its awards for 2013. The Hnatyshyn Foundation Visual Arts Awards, which come with a $25,000 prize and recognizes an outstanding achievement by a Canadian artist to Marcel Dzama, the Winnipeg-born former ringleader of the Royal Art Lodge collective, now an internationally-renowned drawer, filmmaker, and installation artist residing in New York. In recommending Dzama for the award, the jury noted that an “expansive range and depth of narrative” has emerged since the artist first became known for his distinctive drawings. ................... Though the 39-year-old Dzama has enjoyed regular and significant triumphs in the past decade — a major survey at the Musée d’art contemporain de Montréal, 2010; solo exhibitions in Mexico, Germany, the UK, France, and at The Hague over the past three years; costume-designing for Bob Dylan — evidence of his growing international fame became particularly apparent this year. Dzama was awarded a solo exhibition at representative gallerist David Zwirner’s new London location, this spring, and featured among Zwirner’s top sellers at his Art Cologne booth that same season. Further, Dzama has a significant monograph due out this fall, featuring texts by Raymond Pettibon, Dave Eggers, Spike Jonze, and art historian (significantly, for Dzama, a Duchamp expert) Bradley Bailey.
