March 18, 1983, “He knows Kung Fu” On March 18, 1983, the villages of Wolong and Gengda of the prefecture of Wenchuan in Sichuan Province were declared Special Administrative Regions and placed under the control of the Ministry of the Environment, in order to ensure the preservation of many species of animals and plants, but especially that of the Giant Panda. The Wolong National Nature Reserve, protected by UNESCO, was founded in 1963, and since 1980 houses the China Conservation and Research Center for the Giant Panda, the result of the joint efforts of WWF and the Chinese government. Although the event itself constitutes only one of many steps necessary to protect the Giant Panda, it is useful to remember that this animal, because of its unique appearance and its proverbial placidity, its definitely the ambassador of the image of China in the world, and not just figuratively. The Panda has always been the finest diplomatic gift China can offer, and this tradition was already in vogue during the Tang Dynasty, when Empress Wu Zetian (624-705) gave a pair of pandas to the emperor of Japan. La Riserva Naturale Nazionale di Wolong, tutelata dallUNESCO, fu fondata nel 1963, e dal 1980 ospita il Centro per la Conservazione e la Ricerca del Panda Gigante, frutto degli sforzi congiunti del WWF e del governo cinese. Sebbene levento in sé costituisca solo uno dei tanti passi necessari alla salvaguardia del Panda Gigante, è utile ricordare che questo animale, grazie al suo singolare aspetto e alla sua proverbiale placidità, è sicuramente lambasciatore della Cina nel mondo, e non solo in senso figurato. Il Panda è da sempre uno dei migliori doni che la Cina può offrire in ambito diplomatico, e tale tradizione era già in voga durante la dinastia Tang, quando limperatrice Wu Zetian (624-705) donò una coppia di panda allimperatore del Giappone.
