March 21 During the Lenten season, I love to do sermons on the various characters that were involved in the whole cluster of events that make up the passion history of Christ. As stated before I have a series of 15 Lenten sermons in my file under the title, “I See Myself There Reflected.“ One of my favorites is Peter because I meet him in myself and in so many other people that I come into contact with. Peter was impetuous, drawing his sword in the Garden of Gethsemane, lied three times during the trial of Jesus supposedly for his own protection, gave off signals that he had strong racial views. You could do dozens of sermons on the words of Peter, such as, “Though others would forsake you, I never would.” Of course, Peter did exactly what Jesus had predicted he would do, before the cock crowed the second time, Peter had denied three times that he was with Jesus. When Peter came to his senses and realized what he had done, he went out and wept bitterly. How many times in our life in church or with friends have we vowed to be faithful to the Lord all the days of our life, and then discovered we let the Lord and others down? Peter was the first to speak up for the disciples and declare “We believe you are the Christ, the Son of the living God.” But he was the only disciple we know of that denied Jesus three times in probably a matter of hours. This immediately raises a question in my mind about the honesty of all of us, “how many times have we denied our Lord?” Judas betrayed Jesus for 30 pieces of silver. I would allege most of us have done it for a lot less. Prayer: Lord Jesus, write deeply on my heart with the finger of Your Holy Spirit that I will not deny You and follow You all the days of my life.
