March 31, 2014 Good News - Earlier this evening, the U.S. Senate passed a so called ‘Doc Fix’ bill that includes a six month extension for the Maternal, Infant and Early Childhood Home Visiting Program (MIECHV). The bill was passed by the House last Thursday and now goes to President Obama who is expected to sign it into law. This represents a solid interim victory and reflects the work of a broad coalition of stakeholders. Thanks to each of you that participated in the National Day of Action and weighed in with elected officials. Today’s step reflects nascent bipartisan support to continue this vital program to improve outcomes for vulnerable families. It provides Congress additional time to consider a longer-term reauthorization before March 31, 2015 - the new expiration date. Of note, this bill also includes year long extensions of the Title V Personal Responsibility Education Program (PREP) and the Family to Family Health Information Centers until Sept. 30, 2015, also at current funding levels. Thanks and congratulations to partners who have led on these efforts. The bill includes a one year extension of abstinence education funding as well. So, there is much work ahead but we are pleased to share some good news. Sent from Association Of Maternal And Child Health Programs ([email protected]) to [email protected].
