Marching on from March to April, from a cooler to warmer spring. In India where spring is usually short. Before one realizes winter gives way to summer and this time the election campaign has poured additional heat into it. Few springs back Twitter and Facebook acted as catalyst to the Arab Spring revolution. Chinese microbloggers circumvented censorship resulting in the exposure of myriad corruption cases in that closeted nation. Love it or hate it, the social media is going to stay. Many say that the social media is going to have a huge impact in the upcoming elections in India. I frankly believe the social media in India is still nascent and its impact is overrated. There are 20 million Twitter and 78 million Facebook users in India. No doubt a sizable figure in absolute term. Relatively speaking it is less than 10% of Indias total population. Many say the next election in India will be driven by social media. Only time will tell if the activists on the social media with end up being Cyber tigers making a tangible impact or whimpering kittens proven just to be paper tigers. Social media is extremely powerful and its reach is immense. It has a huge future and can only be ignored at ones peril. But they dont exactly represent the vast majority of the average Indian voters, not as of yet.
