THE answer to a thriving business community in Newcastle’s CBD is about getting the mix right and not focusing on a magic bullet, Renew Newcastle’s Marcus Westbury says. ‘‘The CBD needs to adapt,’’ Mr Westbury said. ‘‘But there is no single thing, there is no magic thing.’’ A return to the CBD’s hey day of the 1950s where retail reigned was unlikely to been seen again in the centre of the city. ‘‘That model is broken,’’ he said. Instead, he envisioned a mix of offices, specialist services, niche retail, tourism and businesses which captured not only a local market, but national or global as well. More people living in the CBD and getting the right residential mix was also part of the answer.
