That is something I found in Misters of the Philippines candidate Mario Esquierdo. Nicknamed Emjay, this strapping young man has brazenly confessed in a conversation with me that he is one of the breadwinners of his family and that he drives a tricycle/ pedicab to earn a living aside from his regular part-time modeling job. This 26 year old from Compostela Valley isn’t just your typical boy-next-door type, there is depth underneath those innocent puppy dog eyes of his. In a conversation with him he said, “Proud po ako at diko ikinakahiya ang pagiging tricycle driver ko dito sa amin.” He recounts peddling his cab with his father and how his family leans on him for support. He says that he is mulling over working abroad to be able to save up and provide for his family. “Kaya nga po umabot na sa punto na kakayaning isakripisyo ang pangungulila sa pamilya para maka pag trabaho sa malayo”, he further adds. Having that sense of duty and responsibility at a young age is definitely his advantage in this year’s competition. Beneath those fresh-faced good looks is indeed a man.
