Mark Twain is often quoted as identifying three types of misinformation. They are Lies, Damned Lies, and Statistics. George Junior had a really dumb idea when he championed tax cuts instead of paying down the national debt, and Congress was stupid for passing bills that implemented his dumb idea. The attacks of 9-11-01, along with the unmitigated greed of many Wall Street types, the hands off/let em do what they want approach of former FED Chairman Alan Greenspan (Aug 87 - Jan 06), coupled with the very poor wartime leadership of Secretary of Defense Donald Rumsfeld and his cronies, all created the conditions that made George Juniors style of leadership a disastrous combination which led to many of the results listed. As for the criminals appointed to office; the US Senate has the Constitutional authority to say no to such things. George Junior was not the first nor the last to nominate someone with a record. A Constitutional Amendment requiring all political candidates to pass the government employee background checks required to be a simple employee in the level of government to which they seek office would go a long way toward keeping criminals from being elected or appointed to office. Off the top of my head I can think of a dozen Constitutional Amendments needed to clean up the Federal government. However, Congress would never consider them, and getting the States to call a Constitutional Convention to amend the Constitution is even less likely.
