Marley and Me 4/5 “Im fairly sure that the book and the film shared one common goal. Both tried to make you cry. I didn’t read the book but I know several people that did and said that it really touched their hearts. So I decided to give this movie a try and sure enough it did make me cry. This movie has a few genres mixed in with it. One of them is comedy and on the occasion the film did make me laugh. Most of the film is actually very positive and more light-hearted then the other romantic films I’ve seen. It mixes dry and clever laughs with some delicate and more sensitive topics. That’s when another genre shows itself. The film isn’t too much of a romance but of the many things that make the film work it probably would be the relationship on screen between Owen Wilson and Jennifer Aniston. It just feels so real. Although billed as a romantic comedy, this film is neither: its a drama spanning about two decades in a marriage and how a dog almost ruins that marriage. If there’s anything I DIDN’T like about the film is how scattered the plot was and its tendency to desperately try and be better than the book. Not many films are better than the books or even as good. The fact of the matter is not every book has (or needs) a movie. I’m going to through Marley a biscuit though for its realistic depiction of how powerful a bond can be between a dog and their owner. It’s the strength of the final act that effectively elevates everything that preceded it and in that respect, Marley and Me is a surprisingly moving tale that is cute, funny, and heart-warming. For anyone who’s ever had a dog or a close pet, theres bound to be some connection because theres much more to this movie than just a cute dog”.
