Baker Official Candidate for Congress in Missouri’s 1st District October 2nd, 2013 12:20 AM CST FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: Congressman William “Lacy” Clay of Missouri’s 1st Congressional District just had a “first-person statement” released in regards to the current government shutdown. He stated the following: “Last night...House Republicans proved that they hate the President more than they love their country. The Republican government shutdown is outrageous. Remember, this was their choice, not ours. Speaker John Boehner caved into the anarchists in his own caucus who have shut down the government in an effort to kill the Affordable Care Act. But, that’s not going to happen. Open enrollment began today, on schedule, at healthcare.gov or covermissouri.org House Republicans allowed their Tea Party tantrum to shut down the federal government and bring the United States closer to defaulting on our debt. That’s selfish, irresponsible and wrong. And it proves that they have learned absolutely nothing from the last time they did this to the country.” Congressman Clay, you just don’t get it. You talk about someone else hating a person more than they love their country, you call people names and question their loyalty because they decent. Your actions and words disappoint so many that continue to pray for you so hard to only listen to them. So while your constituents of Missouri’s 1st Congressional District are still awaiting your response to our open letter about your walk out on Patricia Smith, the mother of Sean Smith, and Charles Woods the father of Navy SEAL Tyrone Woods we ask that you be above the name calling and the attacks on others Congressman Clay. Be one of those that works to “transform the jangling discords of our nation into a beautiful symphony of brotherhood”. As much as people try to reach out to you Congressman Clay, you just don’t get it. You are calling this a “Republican shutdown” when it is not. This is a Government shutdown caused by elected officials CHOOSING to focus on parties and politics. This shutdown was caused because the members of Congress are focusing on winning and losing for their party, instead of working for the American People. The American People don’t win if a political party wins, they win when policies eliminate the core problems plaguing us, and are replaced with solutions that prevent them from happening again and build for the future. When it comes to listening to constituents, especially those you disagree with Congressman Clay, you just don’t get it. You label people that disagree with you and policies you support as anarchists. According to Merriam-Webster an anarchist is “a person who rebels against any authority, established order, or ruling power”. Do you even remember another document that spoke about this same topic when it stated: “We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness. That to secure these rights, Governments are instituted among Men, deriving their just powers from the consent of the governed, That whenever any Form of Government becomes destructive of these ends, it is the Right of the People to alter or to abolish it, and to institute new Government, laying its foundation on such principles and organizing its powers in such form, as to them shall seem most likely to effect their Safety and Happiness.” Yes Congressman Clay, when Americans see that the Government has become destructive it is not only our right but our duty to rebel. That is the job of American citizens, and we must do our jobs even though the Representatives in our Government are not doing their job. When it comes to understanding our debt problem Congressman Clay, you just don’t get it. Our country is not closer to defaulting on our debt because of “House Republicans” or the “Tea Party”. Our country is closer to defaulting on our debt because the Government refuses to do what every family must do: make a budget, stick to that budget, and not spend more than they bring in. Members of the current Congress and past Congresses are guilty of spending too much; regardless of their political affiliation. To paraphrase “The Gipper” Congressman Clay: I could say the members of Congress spend like drunken sailors, but that would be unfair to drunken sailors, because the sailors are spending their own money. When it comes to realizing what is really selfish, irresponsible and wrong Congressman Clay, you just don’t get it. Just as each of us in life, every member of Congress has a job that is about choices and the consequences of those choices, be they positive or negative. You make a choice, and then must live with the consequences. Unfortunately members of Congress, regardless of political party, fight to delay, ignore, lessen or even eliminate those consequences. They refuse to accept responsibility for their choices, and attempt to make excuses or lay blame on someone else, something else, or any other number of targets – all so that they do not have to accept the consequences of their choices. Unfortunately Congressman Clay, you are always blaming someone else which only goes to show, that you just don’t get it. Congressman Clay you are amongst those many that continue to CHOOSE to sow discord, and attempt to get Americans to argue, fight and wave fingers at one another as we look for the bad in everyone and everything. We will NOT let you get away from the consequences of your choices. Members of the GOP, the Democratic, Libertarian and all other political parties, Liberals and Conservatives, members of the Tea Party and members of the Congressional Black Caucus and everyone else in between are our brothers and sisters in this world and Americans. We must get past the focus on bitterness, hatred, jealousy and baiting in order to develop the solutions we need to fix our lives and our country. Congressman Clay, please remember the words Dr. King gave us when he said “Hatred paralyzes life; love releases it. Hatred confuses life; love harmonizes it. Hatred darkens life; love illumines it.” Be the one that rises above the hate, the finger pointing, and the blame game. Be the one that stands up for ALL Americans, to all the members of our Federal Government and proudly states that you are an American first and foremost, not a D or an R. That you will not stand by and let us war amongst ourselves, but instead will unite us once again as Americans first. God Bless us ALL! Team Baker
