Martin Daly is a man for whom i have great respect, but from time - TopicsExpress

Martin Daly is a man for whom i have great respect, but from time to time he allows his personal passions and heartfelt emotions to cloud his judgement and influence his reason. Today in his newspaper column there is evidence of that and in my view he went wrong in his treatment of the matter when he said There can be little doubt that he (Kublalsingh) was seduced out of his first hunger strike by the December 3, 2012 agreement. That is wrong in law. No one can or should reasonably expect to benefit from an ongoing illegal act especially in dealings with the state, and the state is obligated to use whatever means at its disposal to bring any such illegal act to an end. He went further wrong when he said it remains my position that it would be damaging to the country’s reputation if, in circumstances of betrayal and unconscionable delay, Dr Kublalsingh dies as a consequence of his second hunger strike. I firmly disagree. This country must establish a reputation internationally that it wont negotiate with anyone under threats of violence, extortion or any other sort of terrorism regardless of at whom it is aimed, especially in the climate of globally organised terrorist groups looking for staging areas to promote their agendas. It is my view that were the Prime Minister to give even the slightest inkling that she might be moved by the antics of the hunger strike and the threat to his person it would embolden others to choose this as a means of negotiations with the government when all other avenues have failed to the detriment of society as a whole. This issue stopped being about the rerouting of the highway the moment Wayne Kublalsingh decided that only his opinion on the issue mattered. From that moment negotiation was based on his way or nothing, and regardless of how one might feel about Wayne or the issue itself, no one, no matter who they might be or feel they are, should be able to impose their will on the elected government of the day or frustrate the expressed will of the people of this country through dint of force and threats of violence. The moment that is allowed to prosper we cease being a democracy. Wayne Kublalsingh created this mess, and only Wayne Kublalsingh can clean it up. Were he to die throwing his tantrum it would be he and only he to blame, emboldened perhaps by his few supporters and those using his stunt to sell newspapers or to have their own day in the sun. That is for another conversation, for this one, should the government want to have anything like a public discussion on where the highway might run, Wayne Kublalsingh has to get out of the way.
