Mary Chestnuts Civil War is a painfully brilliant record of our old America with the daggers drawn. She has wit and shrewdness. She had a fierce abhorrence of slavery, and feminist ambitions. Her observations are strangely modern! She is a remarkable woman whom I can only know through this diary, who loved and married my ancestor, and I feel oddly connected to her. I would love to meet her one day in Heaven!
