Match Report: Biggin Hall FC vs Coundon Social. With two players in the Biggin Hall ranks celebrating birthdays over the weekend it was important for the lads to deliver a belated birthday present in the form of three points. As news emerged that party boy Chris OShea was out until the early hours of the morning necking shots of tequila and jäger bombs Sharples was forced to reconsider his tactics for the season opener. Sharples has also played down reports of a drunken rant from OShea in the Campbell toilets where bystanders claimed the striker was confident of an early season transfer to minnows Canley FC. The players were greeted by a wave of sunshine caressing the hallowed turf of Blackberry Lane, conditions seemed perfect. Biggin Hall started brightly, with early pressure from both Greg Milner and Mark Ward causing problems within the Coundon defensive line. Biggin Hall needed to make this early pressure count with a goal, however a number of diagonally aimed long balls seemed to open up the Biggin Hall defence and the visitors were soon 1-0 up. And it wasnt long before it was two; a scramble of bodies in the home sides area saw the Coundon forward brought down, giving the referee no option but to point to the spot. Biggin Hall then hit back. Following good clearances from Tom Collins and Jonny Clancy, Mark Curtis slid the ball into the path of the on-rushing captain Michael Anstee. A neat interchange of play between Anstee and Milner allowed Anstee to get his shot off; a sublime 20 yard effort curled into the top right hand corner of the goal. This was definitely a worthy strike as Biggins first competitive goal. A look of worry now spread across Sharples face as the lads lined back up for the kick off - Luke will now have to undertake a food challenge set by Anstee following a bet during pre-season. Celebrations were then cut short. A quickly taken corner by Coundon saw the ball dinked into the penalty area and powered in by the incoming attacker; Biggin Hall were caught off guard and the morale appeared to drop. The match then settled for a bit with chances at both ends. Mark Viduka Ward rolled back the years and came close with a superb solo effort. Showing strength and power, his mazy run took him past the Coundon back four and one on one with the goalkeeper. Ward slid the ball past the goalkeeper and saw his effort, which appeared to take a lifetime to reach the goal, roll agonisingly wide. Biggin Hall were then dealt another blow, as a quick break away saw Coundon increase their lead to 4-1, just before the players exited the pitch for half time. With adequate fluids taken on-board the lads took to the pitch for the second half. A fifth goal for Coundon saw the introduction of Dan Bell and Alex Paul to the fray. As the second half wore on and party boy Chris OShea emerged on the sidelines to cheer the team on, Biggin started to create more chances, forcing a number of corners and free kicks. It was from a free kick which saw the team net their second of the day. Mark Curtis stepped up and powered a low, dipping free kick to the far post which saw the goalkeeper parry to the fox in the box Greg Milner. 5-2. To Gregs surprise there was not even a muttering from players or fans alike of the dreaded reference to Andy Carroll today. Greg was delighted. It was soon 5-3. A powerful run down the centre of the pitch saw manager Luke Sharples unleash a wonder strike from 25 yards high into the top of the net. There was a nervousness now about Coundon and Biggin Hall were smelling blood. Coundon reacted by changing tactics, introducing two holding midfielders to the game. Coundon then broke away and added a sixth, quashing any hopes of a late Biggin revival not long before the end of the match. Following reflection on the match Biggin Hall will not be too disheartened. Fitness will soon pick up and Coundon, also a new team to the league, will certainly be one of the better teams the lads will face this season. Off the team went back to the Biggin Hall pub for some carbs and protein refuelling in the form of chips and sausages. Final score Biggin Hall FC 3 - 6 Coundon Social Man of the match: Mark Ward
