Match report: Chelsea 0 Besiktas 1 A late goal by Ersan Gulum saw us fall to a 1-0 defeat against Besiktas in Istanbul, as the Slaven Bilics side were crowned winners of the Turkish charity competition in aid of the Soma mining disaster. Jose Mourinho made three changes to the Chelsea side which beat Fenerbahce 2-0 in our opening game. FilipeLuis came in at left-back for Cesar Azpilicueta, while there were also starts for both Ramires and Willian, with Oscar and Andre Schurrle the players making way. As in the first game, Diego Costa started up front for the Blues. With both teams having won their opening matches, whichever side came out on top over the 45 minutes would be crowned winners of the tournament. Diego Costa had the first chance of the game but, under pressure, needed to take the shot early, meaning he was unable to generate enough power in the strike to trouble Besiktas goalkeeper Cenk Gonen. The recently-departed Demba Ba was introduced as one of four Besiktas substitutes after 15 minutes with the game, as a spectacle, struggling to get going. A double switch for the Blues saw Oscar and Drogba replace Eden Hazard and Diego Costa, with the Brazilian moving out to play wide on the left-hand side. A brilliant Drogba free-kick immediately after his introduction almost gave us the lead but his dipping strike was well saved by Gonen. Both sides were struggling to create chances of any note and it was the defensive players on show coming out on top. Mourinho replaced Cesc Fabregas with Mohamed Salah as the clock ticked down, but it was Besiktas who went closest to taking the lead as Ba saw his strike well saved by Petr Cech. From the resulting corner, however, the Turkish side broke the deadlock, and with only two minutes remaining there was little time to reply. The corner was swung in from the left, with the ball landing invitingly at the feet of Ersan Gulum who tapped into an empty net. Fernando Torres and John Mikel Obi were introduced for the closing minutes but we were unable to work Gonen in the Besiktas goal, ensuring it was Bilics men who were crowned winners of the competition. On the plus side for the Blues, Mourinho will have been delighted to be able to use Andre Schurrle and our Brazilian contingent for the first time in pre-season, while Eden Hazard and Drogba were also able to enhance their match fitness. Next up is a game against Ferencvaros in Budapest on Sunday.
