Matilda (Xzannjah Matsi) is a young girl living on the island of Bouganville in Papua New Guinea. She is raised by a strict mother Dolores (Healesville Joel) and attends school, where her teacher, Mr Watts (Hugh Laurie), is the only white man in the village. As war descends on her province, she is captivated with the character of Pip in the Charles Dickens novel, Great Expectations, who eventually becomes her beacon of hope and gives her desire to live.
