Matthew 15:10-14 And he called the multitude, and said unto them, - TopicsExpress

Matthew 15:10-14 And he called the multitude, and said unto them, Hear, and understand: Not that which goeth into the mouth defileth a man; but that which cometh out of the mouth, this defileth a man. Then came his disciples, and said unto him, Knowest thou that the Pharisees were offended, after they heard this saying? But he answered and said, Every plant, which my heavenly Father hath not planted, shall be rooted up. Let them alone: they be blind leaders of the blind. And if the blind lead the blind, both shall fall into the ditch. Jesus has just handled an accusation from the Pharisees regarding his disciples “breaking the tradition of the elders”. Basically, they’re upset because Jesus’ disciples didn’t wash their hands before they ate. Jesus calls the accusers hypocrites, and quotes Isaiah in vs. 8-9, “’These people honor me with their lips, but their hearts are far from me. They worship me in vain; their teachings are merely human rules.’” Jesus is not interested in the human traditions that have been installed as the word of God. Today’s verse is Jesus turning to the crowd and correcting this wrong. What comes out of the mouth, i.e. words, is what defiles a person because it reflects what is in the heart. Jesus does not waver, defends His disciples, and broadcasts a teaching moment.
