Matthew 5:13 “You are the salt of the earth; but if the salt - TopicsExpress

Matthew 5:13 “You are the salt of the earth; but if the salt has become tasteless, how can it be made salty again? It is no longer good for anything, except to be thrown out and trampled under foot by men.” Salt had several purposes during the time Jesus was physically on earth. It was used to enhance flavor in food. It was used to preserve meat, and was also used as wages for a day’s work. Jesus warns that we should not lose our saltiness. What does it mean to lose our saltiness? It means that we lose our purpose, we lose what we are made to do and we become worthless. What does it mean to be salty then? I think we can look back at the first 12 verses and find the answer: Be poor in spirit. Be mournful. Be gentle. Be hungry and thirsty for righteousness. Be merciful. Be pure in heart. Be peacemakers. Be persecuted because of our righteousness. Be insulted and falsely accused for the sake of Christ. Be able to rejoice because of our persecution. If we are not experiencing and practicing these things we may be losing our flavor, our saltiness, and our purpose. ~Luke
