Matthew Calbraith Perry was born April 10, 1794 and died March 4, 1858. He was the Commodore of the US Navy who compelled the opening of Japan to the west with the Convention of Kanagawa in 1854. The son of Navy Captain Christopher Raymond Perry and the younger brother of Commodore Oliver Hazard Perry of the US Navy, he was related to the Rodgers family in Perryville and Havre de Grace by the marriage of his sister Sarah to Robert Smith Rodgers.
