Mattie Frances Adams Spears of Opp, Alabama, passed away Monday, January 13, 2014, at her home in the Estothel community. She was 90. Graveside services will be held Friday, January 17, 2014, at 11:00 AM at Peaceful Acres Memorial Gardens in Opp with Reverend Cephus Austin Phillips officiating and Wyatt Funeral Home directing. The family will receive friends at the funeral home on Thursday, January 16, 2014, from 6:00 to 8:00 PM. Frances was born on August 7, 1923, in Pike County, Alabama, to the late Martha Jane Reeves and Frank Soloman Adams. She married the late Charlie Ray Spears in 1942. After Charlie’s discharge from the Army, they settled in the Estothel community where they reared their two daughters. Frances always lovingly referred to her daughters as “the girls.” She was a graduate of Kinston High School and received her BS and MS degrees in mathematics from Troy State University with additional graduate studies at the University of Alabama. She taught mathematics at Opp High School for seven years and in 1967 transferred to Douglas MacArthur Technical College where she developed and implemented the Related Mathematics Program and then taught in this program for nineteen years. Frances was a member of the Order of Eastern Star, Kinston Home Demonstration Club, The Century Club of Opp, Alabama, General Federation of Women’s Clubs, Alabama and National Education Associations and served on the Board of Directors for the Kinston School Foundation. She also co-edited a book on the history of Kinston and the greater Kinston community, Cross Trails Remembered. Frances was member of the First Baptist Church of Kinston where she served as Sunday school teacher and church clerk. In addition to her parents and husband, Frances was predeceased by seven brothers, James Oscar Adams, Jerry Jackson Adams, Dewey Wilmer Hixon Adams, Eron Sylester Adams, Charlie Edd Adams, Luther Guy Eugene Adams, and an infant brother. Frances is survived by her two girls Nyoka Bowdoin and husband Jim of Ino, Charla Adkison and husband Rodney of Enterprise; three grandchildren, Jim Parker Bowdoin, Jr. and wife Tamra of Ino; Frances Bowdoin Phillips and husband Chris of Cartersville, Georgia, and Alex Cawthon Adkison of Enterprise; three great-grandchildren, William Parker Phillips, Addison Lynn Bowdoin, and Charlie Christopher Phillips. Also surviving are nieces Cheryl Graves, Opp; Debbie Nobles, Kinston; Kathy Davis, Opp; Sue Donaldson, Santa Rosa, California; Carolyn Dyess, Samson; and nephew Michael Adams, Orlando, Florida; sisters-in-law Margaret Adams, Opp; and Mable Adams, Winter Haven, Florida; and a special niece-in-law Lurlene Adams, Elba. Her girls would like to thank Dr. Bob Williams and his nurse Starla Hattaway, Dayspring Hospice, special neighbors Bonnie and David Sutherland, Sally and Wayne Reynolds, and Susan and Tim Sumblin, and three special caregivers, Lori Johnson, Kathy Hill and Joyce Sanders for their care, love and devotion to their mother. Frances loved her family and prepared Sunday dinner for her girls and their families until her health prevented her from doing so. An afternoon of lively discussion around the dinner table always followed the meal. Frances also organized and prepared birthday celebrations, holiday dinners, and family reunions. Those involved in the occasions will forever cherish the wonderful memories that they have of a very special lady.
