Matua residents campaign meeting last night. A big crowd showed, - TopicsExpress

Matua residents campaign meeting last night. A big crowd showed, even though some of them have already voted. For once, council debt was NOT the major topic of conversation, although it haunted the room. People were genuinely wanting to know what candidates could bring to the council table. The word "consolidation" came up quite often - we need to consolidate the current investment in infrastructure and avoid new spending. As has become the norm, the environment barely rated a mention for candidates who were either defending their record or raising social issues. The exceptions are Michael Morris for whom protecting the environment is a key platform issue, and John Roberts who at least gets that there is a link between environment and economy.
