May 1914 CLARENDON GARAGE IS TOTAL LOSS EARLY MORNING FIRE ORIGIN ATING IN GARAGE SPREADS TO LAUNDRY BEFORE BEING CON- TROLLED. , (From The Daytona Gazette-News) A fire that la supposed to have started between 1 and 2 a. m. Thurs- day spread from the Clarendon garage, near Ocean boulevard and Bath street, and after totally destroying the garage and all its contents spread to the laundry adjoining on the south and that structure and all init will also be a total loss. Only hard work en behalf of the Seabreeze fire company with two lines of hose kept the fire from spreading to other frame buildings which were separated from the conflagration by only a few feet The origin of the fire is not known, the entire inferior of the garage being a mass of flame when discovered by man sleeping In the laundry, and at this time there was no chance of saving any of the contents of either of the destroyed buildings In the garage the entire stock and machine shop equipment was wiped out, as well as the furnishings in the second story of the structure where there were a number of steering rooms There was no one living in this part of the building The heaviest loss will be in the garage proper where ix machines were burned, only one of which it is known was insured, hat being the handsome Pope-Hart ford seven-passenger car, the personal property of Manager E L Potter of the Hotel Clarendon, who was In Evansville, Ind, at the time of the fire Other cars destroyed were a Buick, being stored there, be longing to a Mr Newell, a Pierce Arrow car, belonging to Sidue I Haigh, and three autocars, one a baggage truck and two Hotel Clarendon buses in which it is understood Mr Haigh holds an interest in connection with his other livery business These cars were not insured The laundry business was two stories, and all equipment and second floor furnishings are ruined The second story of this building was used as- a dormitory for the workers during the season It is under stood that there was no night watch man on the premises The buildings and room furnishings are practically all covered by insurance, and the probabilities are that the fire will mean that just that many more of the buildings in the Hotel Clarendon group will be fireproof before an other season Is here, for the burned buildings are essential to the hotel The fact that another large two-story building on the north, used as worker quarters, was covered with a cement construction is probably all that saved that structure, which was on fire several different times.
