May 21 - Apples of Gold If we are totally depraved and can make no choice to do good, then this world would be hell, with unmitigated evil rampant! Yet there are plenty of examples of people who sacrifice their comfort, time, money, and even their lives to help others. All through the Bible, God pleads with sinners to repent—with Israel to obey Him; Jesus weeps over Jerusalem and says “How often would I...[but] ye would not” (Luke 13:34). All of this would be a mockery if, at the same time that God is pleading with men to repent, He is withholding from them the irresistible grace without which Calvin said man could not repent. The Bible clearly teaches that we have the right and power to choose—either to obey God or to disobey, to love or to hate, to accept the pardon for sin and eternal life (which He offers in His grace), or to reject it. O Jerusalem, Jerusalem, which killest the prophets, and stonest them that are sent unto thee; how often would I have gathered thy children together, as a hen doth gather her brood under her wings, and ye would not! —Luke 13:34
