May is Brain Tumor Awareness Month. Throughout the month we will be sharing facts and statistics about pediatric brain tumors. Will you help us raise awareness? You can do your part by simply sharing our posts. Today we share some perspective, a sobering statistic that demonstrates the disparity of research funding. In 1962 the survival rate of childhood acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL) was 4%. Today it is 94%. Thankfully more children are surviving this diagnosis. That is what research does. According to the Central Brain Tumor Registry of the U.S. (for the years 1995-2008), the 5 year survival rate for medulloblastoma is approximately 60% and for glioblastoma it is about 20%. Sadly, these survival rates have remained relatively unchanged. Our children deserve better. They deserve safer, more effective, less toxic treatments so that they not only survive, but experience a good quality of life. Awareness > Funding > Research > Cure
