May is National Physical Fitness and Sports Month! This is a great time to renew your commitment to a healthy, active lifestyle. It’s also a great time to help your kids build great habits that will last a lifetime! Young people need AT LEAST 60 MINUTES OF PHYSICAL ACTIVITY EACH DAY! In addition to the obvious physical health benefits, regular activity offers cognitive health benefits as well. Research shows that when children are physically active, they record better attendance, behave better and achieve higher grades. Put simply, active kids do better! But how can we encourage kids to be more physically active? Part of the answer seems to involve finding ways to integrate physical activity into children’s everyday routine, wherever they live, work and play… There are some really interesting efforts underway to increase physical activity in a variety of important settings: schools, preschool and childcare centers, community, family and home, and primary care. A subcommittee of the President’s Council on Fitness, Sports & Nutrition produced a 2012 report examining what the authors call “Strategies to Increase Physical Activity Among Youth”. You can read that report here: health.gov/paguidelines/midcourse/pag-mid-course-report-final.pdf You can also learn more about National Physical Fitness and Sports Month here: fitness.gov/
