Maybe its my phase of life. Maybe its the number of years Ive been in the consulting/coaching/speaking world, but my interest in thought leaders and Amazing New Ideas has waned over the years. Throughout my entire career, my emphasis has been on getting results. Knowledge, Big Ideas, Coolness, The Next Big Thing, and Technology are simply means to an end. The end is creating the world we want to live in. About five years ago, Shelle Rose Charvet and I had a conversation in which I suddenly realized that Ive learned more in my life than most people are ever exposed to (reading a book a week, applying what I learn whenever possible, etc. Its kind of what I do for fun). And when I look at what stops people from reaching their goals, its rarely lack of information; its more often lack of thoughtful application of that information. Thats why Ive called myself a coach rather than consultant. I like being part of the process until the process actually produces results. And the Get-it-Done Guy is a great fit: its all about actually producing results. So the big question that sparked this little bit of introspection: should I attend a $700 conference if the only benefit of the conference is likely to be new content? (As opposed to valuable connections or prospective business.)
