BHm -Profiles No 31 Judy Garland Frances Ethel Gumm (1922-1969) Born in Grand Rapids, Minnesota to a banker father and vaudeville mother she entertained the public from the age of 3 with her elder sisters in a group The family moved to the filming industry of Hollywood hoping the girls would get a kick start to their careers. At the tender age of 17 she signed a contract with MGM and packed a lot of film work in the early years with marked success especially with Mickey Rooney. To keep the pace up and cope with difficutly in personal life issues her health began to suffer and drinking spoilt her career after the wonderful performance in Wizard of Oz. Her role in A star is Born was memorable too. Judy Garland has sang around the world and enchanted millions. Her appeal still holds after over 40 years of passing. Her two daughters Lisa Minelli and Lorna Luft have followed with moderate success and a festival is celebrated at a museum in her place of birth each year.
