Maybe it’s only when you work in the media that you become so - TopicsExpress

Maybe it’s only when you work in the media that you become so aware of the shocking way some stories are told ... Last week, BBC World News spent more time focusing on a city in Israel which has been hit by rockets (Sderot, zero casualties) than on the mass murder in Gaza. This morning, RTE Radio One featured an interview with the Israeli Ambassador to Ireland, with no voice from the Palestinian side. No qualms about interviewing an apologist for mass murder in the most crowded refugee camp on earth. How can someone who thinks it is fine to lock 1.8 million people into a tiny enclave, with no escape by land, air or sea, and then bomb them, get such an easy ride? A few minutes later, local radio had an interview with Mark Regev, spokesman for the Prime Minister for Israel. This man speaks at every opportunity to defend a death toll which has now passed 500. Again, uncontested. Again, he’s allowed to preach the mantra that Hamas are “terrorists” (this might be true, but who has killed far more?) and the lie that the State of Israel cares for the people of Gaza. Israel has nothing but contempt for the people of Gaza, hence the decision to herd them – mostly refugees from what is now ‘Israel’ - into a tiny enclave in the first place. Last Saturday, an Irish Times journalist accused Sinn Fein of a “publicity stunt” for getting the Dail to stand up in solidarity with the people of Gaza. It seems that opportunism by the Shinners is a greater crime than appeasing or turning a blind eye to the slaughter of innocents. A far more important question: why aren’t the Irish Government and EU expelling Israeli diplomats or boycotting Israeli goods in response to the slaughter? Oh, and why is our new (FG) Minister for Foreign Affairs a member of the Oireachtas ‘Friends of Israel’ grouping in Leinster House? Is he really going to call that country to account for bombing a hospital yesterday, which is a war crime? Sometimes I’m ashamed to call myself a journalist.
